My dolls are signed “Lulu” as I mentioned before. My nick name “Lulu” came about partly from Lucia (my middle name) and from the “Little Lulu” comic books. Although I was very young, I hated being called Lulu or Little Lulu.
When I started elementary school I was happy to be called by my first name Esther. As a child I felt proud to be called by my name Esther Williams as it was a very popular name in those days.  Folks would often comment about
“the famous Esther Williams”.  I therefore asked my mom to call me Esther instead, and eventually the nickname “Lulu” died and even I forgot about it. However, when I started making my dolls, many years later, without giving it much thought, I started signing them “Lulu”.
I thought it so amazing that I would go back to a name that I had once hated, that I decided to call my business Lulu’s Dolls. Now, I don’t mind being called Lulu anymore.

At first when I would sell one of my dolls I would become very emotional.  It was like loosing one of my children. However, throughout the years I have come to accept it.

I am so grateful to my God Almighty for bestowing such a wonderful talent on me. I especially love it when people appreciate my creativity and the amount of work that goes into making these dolls from scratch.  Doll making is very labor intensive and time consuming. It takes quite some time before we reach the end product; a beautiful Lulu’s Doll.

It also gives me great satisfaction when customers compliment me by saying that the dolls are beautiful. However, there are some persons who do not realize that Lulu’s dolls are authentic, something they will not find everywhere as they are not mass-produced.

When I started out I only made dark brown doll bodies, on request I started making dolls with lighter bodies. Now you can choose to have your dolls made in vanilla, tan or chocolate colored bodies, which are sewn from polyester/cotton fabrics.

The bestseller in my shop in St. Maarten is most certainly the doll which represents our island the “Saint Martin Double Doll”. She is reversible, half Dutch St. Maarten, dressed in floral fabrics on one side and half French St. Martin, dressed in madras/plaid when you flip her over. She is available in small, medium and large.

My number 2 doll is called the “Friendship doll” she is vanilla on one side and chocolate on the reverse side.  She is available in small and large.

The Unity doll can be used front and back.  The remarkable thing about this” front and back” doll (chocolate and vanilla) is that they share the same dress.

Other dolls that are very much liked are our barefoot babies, barefoot dolls, lulu dolls in small, medium and large, colored socks dolls in small and large, lil long leg dolls, medium long leg dolls (who have hair extensions for hair), the Sign Doll (who resembles the doll on my logo), T.C. (Tender Care), Shaggy the Beach Boy, the French mademoiselle (dressed in madras/plaid), the bikini doll, the mermaid doll, Pursie girl, the bag lady and my kitchen utensil covers: the blender cover doll and the toaster cover doll, the kitchen roll doll, magnets, angels and these are not yet all of my dolls.

After reading about how I got started I hope you will decide to become the proud owner of one or more authentic Lulu’s Dolls.
